As we reach Easter Monday, it is time to conclude this brief poetic series on Holy Week the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Christ , in which we have been accompanied by works by Lope de Vega the romance “Al levantarle en la Cruz” and the sonnet “¡Cuántas veces, Señor, me habéis llamado…” , Rafael Sánchez Mazas the sonnet “Cristo” , and Antonio Murciano “Acción de gracias,” also a sonnet .
Today I’ll share another sonnet titled “Thank You, Lord” by the sculptor, painter, and poet Luis Álvarez Lencero Badajoz, 1923 –Mérida, 1983 . It appears on page 20 of his book Poemas para hablar con Dios Poems to Speak with God , which includes a foreword by Alejandro García Galán and was published in Madrid by Artes Gráficas Ibarra in 1982. This text, like Murciano’s sonnet, expresses the gratitude of the poetic “I” note the repetition of “Thank you for…” in lines 1, 3, 5, 12, and 13 toward that “friendly God” line 14 to whom he speaks.
I am grateful for this life you have given me, and also because one day I will become death. Thank you for this opportunity to receive you— your body transformed into sacred bread. I give thanks, Lord, for all that exists, for my sufferings and my cross, so much so that I would not be worthy to love you if I were not crucified in You.
Bendito sea cada dolor cotidiano.
Los clavos que me conectan al madero
me mantendrán siempre a tus pies contigo.
Gracias por el abrazo de María.
Gracias por tanto cariño y por morir
besándote las heridas, Dios amigo.
Blessed be every daily pain. The nails that bind me to the cross will keep me forever at your feet, with you. Thank you for Mary’s embrace. Thank you for so much love and for dying while kissing your wounds, God, my friend.
When words leap from my mind onto the blank page, thoughts overflow and feelings become poetry. Some are surprised, and others feel admiration when reading poetic language,
pensando que es algo inalcanzable.
No logran convencerse
de que las palabras y los versos
fluyan casi sin impedimentos
y se dibujen en el papel
las inquietudes, los sueños,
las ilusiones, los pensamientos…
thinking it’s something out of reach. They can’t bring themselves to believe that words and verses flow almost unhindered and take shape on the page— their worries, their dreams, their hopes, their thoughts…
que emergen del cofre
del alma y las neuronas,
para transmitir al otro
la intimidad más profunda.
A veces no me reconozco
como creador de lo que he escrito,
cuando, pasado un tiempo,
vuelvo a repasar los poemas.
that emerge from the treasure chest of the soul and the neurons, to convey to another the deepest intimacy. Sometimes I don’t recognize myself as the creator of what I’ve written, when, after some time has passed, I revisit the poems.
De cualquier manera, agradezco
a Dios que hace posible
romper la soledad del egoísmo
y me anima a abrir el corazón
para permitir que el hombre,
In any case, I thank God for making it possible to break through the loneliness of selfishness and for encouraging me to open my heart to allow others,
and may the women who read them share in my reflections and emotions. What a joy that they are no longer just mine and that others can glimpse, through the written word, the life that flows through my mind! When it’s hard to speak and it’s difficult to connect with the world,
que parece complejo y hostil,
¡Gracias, Dios mío, por el regalo
de poder expresarme por escrito
y fijar para siempre
las palabras que la boca no dice,
pues la timidez las silencia!
Y por fin hallo la forma which seems complex and hostile, Thank you, my God, for the gift of being able to express myself in writing and to preserve forever the words that my mouth does not speak, for shyness silences them! And at last I find the way
de romper las cadenas
y derribar los muros
del castillo que me aísla.
to break the chains and tear down the walls of the castle that isolates me.
¡Compartan mis inquietudes!
¡Conozcan cómo ha crecido
la vida que habita en mí! No creo que tenga la autoridad
para esconder este regalo,
que otorga significado a la existencia,
cuando todo es un presente
de Dios, quien siempre se aproxima
distribuyendo su Amor
Share my concerns! See how the life that dwells within me has grown! I don’t think I have the right to hide this gift, which gives meaning to existence, when everything is a gift from God, who always draws near sharing His Love
a quienes deseen acogerlo
y dejando el espíritu lleno,
que anteriormente estuvo desorientado
en la nada de una vida
to those who wish to welcome it and leaving the spirit fulfilled, which was once lost in the nothingness of a life
controlled by the fleeting. Poems should shed light on our lives. Poems should make our lives tangible on paper. And no one leads a simple life. No one’s life is uncomplicated. There are aspects of our lives that television cannot offer, that not even movies can provide. Poems are my refuge for that. There I find complexity, that part of us that
realmente no comprendemos.
We don't really understand. What I long for is the complexity and the powerful opportunities that a poem or poetic language can offer us. What we understand now is, as Brown says, “No one leads a life that isn't complicated.” That's why I want to express my gratitude for that idea and acknowledge just how complicated life can be for many people.
I also want to express my gratitude for the space a poem offers—for how complete it can be, even when it seems insufficient, austere, and measured. How courageous a poem can be in and of itself, and how it can amaze us, bring us joy, and guide us toward the fullness within ourselves. I am grateful to have arrived
sano y salvo a un nuevo día,
por el regalo de la vista
para apreciar el mundo,
por el don de la mente
que me permite sentirme en mi hogar
en esta vida,
safe and sound into a new day, for the gift of sight to appreciate the world, for the gift of the mind that allows me to feel at home in this life,
las posibilidades
rompiendo en la orilla del nuevo amanecer,
lo que el pasado ha cosechado
que saciará mi curiosidad,
y todas las oportunidades
que traerá este nuevo día. Escucha
, al caer la noche expresamos agradecimiento,
the possibilities breaking upon the shore of the new dawn, what the past has reaped that will satisfy my curiosity, and all the opportunities that this new day will bring. Listen — as night falls, we give thanks,
We stop on the bridges to lean over the railings, we rush out of the glass rooms with our mouths full of food to look up at the sky and give thanks, we stand by the water, acknowledging it, smiling by the windows, looking out in our respective directions.
returning from a round of hospital visits following an attack after the funerals, we express our gratitude upon hearing the news of the losses whether we knew them or not, we express our gratitude. Over the phone, we share our thanks at the doors, in the back of cars, and in the elevators
continuamos diciendo gracias gracias.
Remembering the wars and the police at the entrance and the blows on the stairs, we express our gratitude on the benches we proclaim our thanks to the faces of the officials and the wealthy and to all those who will never change we continue to say thank you, thank you.
con los animales pereciendo a nuestro alrededor
nuestros sentimientos perdidos continuamos expresando gracias
Estamos comunicando.
With animals perishing all around us, we continue to express our gratitude despite our lost feelings. With forests collapsing faster than the minutes of our lives, we say thank you. With words flowing like cells from a brain, while cities expand over us, we say thank you faster and faster. Even though no one is listening, we continue to say thank you. We are communicating.
