Squirrelbait's Prepper's Plan for Scenario: Blackout

Scenario: Nationwide Regional Blackouts

<h2 Scenario: </h2 There is a blizzard coming that is expected to last about 4 days with a record amount of snow as well as subfreezing temperatures expected for the next 2 weeks. Later that evening around 9pm, the power goes out. The phone blares the national emergency message. It basically informs you that there are large regional blackouts across the nation due to a terrorist attack on the nation’s grid. Stay calm and stay in your home. Martial law has been declared for the affected areas. A range of authoritative agencies will be out to enforce it. You know, local authorities, national guard, etc. The enforcement entails up to and including the use of deadly force.

The authorities have endless supplies coming into them for generators, gas for vehicles, etc. Also, all the cameras are solar powered and connected to the internet via Starlink.

Your phone only allows emergency use. Cell towers are down, restricted satellite usage through the provider is all there is. You look out the window. The blizzard is here. The wind is banging against the windows. The temperature is dropping.

No power = no water pumps, no gas pumps, once generators run out, no medical care, no nuclear plant safe shutdown unless they completed the procedures while on generator power , no one is coming to help only to herd and take.

<h3 Immediate Action:</h3

Use the laptop to charge my phone if it is low or turn it off the laptop to save the battery to charge it later. Need to know what the “compliance plan” is. Keep phone on person in a pocket to keep it warm so the battery will last as long as possible.

Fill the old juice/milk/etc. containers I have saved in the basement with water. Fill every pot I have with water. Fill the tub with water.

Create a blanket fort to hold in body heat in the second bedroom as it has the least amount of outside walls and the one that it has does not face the wind. Put the mattress from the bed as the base/floor for the fort. Have the kitchen chairs facing inward so they can be used as a shelf put the solar lantern on one of them .

Layer up clothing. Put hair up and put on a hat. Put on red booties then slippers, have boots by the back door. Go get the large sleeping bag from the basement and put it in the blanket fort. Pile in all the blankets we have. Save the other sleeping bags for our escape from the area or sudden retreat to the basement see Acknowledgements . Use if needed but should not need to.

<h3 Acknowledgements:</h3

Can’t raid the local grocery store due to the storm and the local authorities. I live in a small town. The authorities will be guarding the only grocery store we have and enforcing the orders to keep us inside our homes.

Can not hide in the basement. The radon fan will not be working and it will be colder down there. However, if the need arises be prepared to retreat down there. If this blackout is followed up with more kinetic attacks, the basement may be needed.

There are no resources locally for a sustained bug in. We will have to sneak out of here and get to resources once the weather permits. Will have to sneak out on foot. Cars will be stopped by the authorities plus there is no way to refill the gas tank anyway. Need to get as south as we can or to a place with power where the authorities are not “keeping people safe”.

Do not go to any centers or food/water pickup stations. Do not trust the authorities. They are not friendlies. Wolves in sheep's clothing. Stay away from “help” they offer. Do not trust any consumables they provide even if they set a care package on the front steps.

The water I have gathered will freeze.

<h3 Actions To Take: </h3

Be quiet and keep blinds closed. Use light discipline. Do not draw attention. Making it look like no one is home.

Do not answer the door. The authorities will be “checking on” people. Do not answer the door. They are taking note of supplies and arms people have. Their priority is order, not safety and survival of the populace.

Put saved plastic grocery bags in the toilet for solid waste. Save them in a box then at night when you can, dispose of them outside. Garbage bin out back and/or just through the bags on the compost pile behind the shed.

Urinate in a jug/glass/jar/whatever then pour it down the sink or the drain in the basement floor.

Rotate water so that there is water staying above freezing in the blanket shelter at all times.

Ration food as the duration is unknown. Eat perishable and heavy items first. Fridge and canned food items. Eat right out of the cans to reduce dirty dishes.

Because we can not hide in the basement guarding the only entrance single point of entry , blockade the front door, put traps and obstacles by the windows, have guns as well as other self defense and home defense materials. Board with nails Broken sharp glass glued to window sills

Gather snow in a bucket from out back, use to wash dishes. Snow is a watery scrubby.

Use wet wipes for personal hygiene.

<h3 Planning:</h3

Prep the basement in case we need to run down there. Use the tent and blankets to make a fort with the blow-up mattress inside it. Have ½ of the water stored down there.

Prep for sneak out to a place of refuge outside “the Zone” aka get off the X once the weather permits it: Layout Bug out outfit. Black warm clothes. Green sweater under black sweatshirt, tan pants under black pants. My best socks. Green buff for my face. Pack up herbs - my bug out bag. Plan locations to go to. Can hop from known resource location to resource location heading south. Plan to avoid all cities areas. Use bike paths and train tracks as much as possible and move only at night. The first location has limited resources and is south and accessible via bike path then country back roads after cutting through a grassland wildlife reserve area. Can reach it in one evening. Wooded with animal/food resources. Water might be frozen as it is a stream/very small river. Can melt snow using a small sheltered fire.

Along the way out, plan to take advantage of low priority resource opportunities like Veterinarian clinics, dental offices, etc. Medicine and many have a staff kitchenette. Alarms will not be working.
