Samaná, the Dominican Republic’s Natural Haven It is a little-known place, full of jungles and brimming with authentic charm. This is how this Caribbean nation’s emerging eco-paradise presents itself. Winding its way through twisting trails lined with lush vegetation, and with the brilliant turquoise blue of its waters as a backdrop, the majestic Santa Bárbara de Samaná emerges,

the main city on the peninsula that bears its second name, Samaná. The richness of its natural surroundings, its endless pristine beaches, the warmth of its people, and a tourism approach that respects nature are the defining features of one of the most attractive and surprising areas of the Dominican Republic; it is therefore not surprising that this part of the country is described as “a different Caribbean.”

THE TAÍNO HERITAGE The story begins long before Columbus arrived, when the Taínos—the indigenous group that inhabited much of the Caribbean—dominated the region. However, the founding of what we now know as the province’s vibrant and beautiful capital, Santa Bárbara de Samaná, took place in 1756.

OVERLOOKING THE BAY Its fishing-village charm and its colorful colonial houses—cheerful and full of life, adorning the boardwalk or Avenida de la Marina with shades of pink, blue, green, and yellow—are part of its essence. So too is the history reflected in those waters, where Europeans and Haitians fought for control for years, and where every year, from December to March, humpback whales arrive to mate and give birth, attracting both locals and visitors.

A MELTING POT OF CULTURES The richness of this area’s cultural diversity and heritage is impressive. This is evident in the petroglyphs and pictographs that indigenous peoples carved into the rocks of the caves; in the variety of beliefs—Protestant,

Catholic and Methodist—found in their churches; in traditional dances, ranging from the African bamboulá to bachata; or in its rich cuisine, which blends Anglo-Caribbean roots with Dominican Creole cuisine. This is the Samaná Peninsula, an unspoiled paradise where you can experience the essence of the Dominican Republic from a different perspective.

LOCAL EXPERIENCE Exploring the capital means immersing yourself in the cultural mix and discovering local life from the inside. One such place is the Samaná Central Market, where you can learn about the tropical products grown in the region—such as corn, rice, and coconuts—of which this area is the island’s leading producer.

You can also eat at one of the local restaurants, such as Tierra y Mar, where you simply must try the lambí, crab cakes, Samaná-style fish, or arroz moro de guandules—a dish made with guandules, a type of black bean that gives color to the rice cooked in coconut milk. When night falls, it’s worth visiting one of the bars along the boardwalk to enjoy a beer and some local music.

THE CITY'S EMBLEM One of the most iconic sites in Samaná, aside from its boardwalk, is La Churcha. This wooden church, built in the Gothic style and designated a Cultural Heritage Site, is unique in that it was erected by freed African Americans in the 18th century after the Haitian government offered them free farmland.

Its name is a Dominican variation of the English word “church,” and the African Methodist faith is practiced there. A NATURAL SANCTUARY

Over the centuries, the humpback whales that inhabited these waters were hunted for their meat, their oil was used as fuel, and their baleen was turned into tools, causing their numbers to plummet by the mid-19th century and placing them at serious risk of extinction.

However, efforts to restore the species and the goal of making Samaná an eco-friendly and sustainable destination have led to Samaná Bay being considered one of the best places in the world to observe whales in their natural habitat. Each year, approximately 2,000 whales migrate to these warm, safe, and shallow waters from the North Atlantic to the Caribbean, seeking to socialize, mate, and give birth to their calves.

All of this is explained in detail at the Samaná Whale Museum, where visitors can learn about these mammals and which plays a crucial role in educating the local community about whales and their habitat.
