How are you all? I hope you are all doing well. With the cold weather all around, I don't feel like asking who is good and who is bad anymore. How can I? I am exhausted from working so hard in the cold. Still, sometimes I have to prioritize my own interests. And one of the places I like the most is this platform. Because this is the only place I can share everything that is on my mind with you. That's why I have come to you today.
Among the memories of childhood, some shine brighter than the rest—simple yet unforgettable. One such radiant memory was receiving a prize from school for doing well in exams. There was an unmatched joy in walking back home through the narrow lanes of our government quarters, clutching a prize in my hand, the fruit of hard work done in between games and study sessions. That joy was pure, innocent, and still lives in my heart as a warm echo of the past.
Our school was a small government school located near a rural area. Although it wasn’t a grand institution, the standard of education was high, and the teachers were sincere and responsible. They didn’t just teach us to memorize lessons but made us love learning. From a very young age, I was drawn to books and learning. I wasn’t an average student; I always tried to be better than average. I did my homework regularly and made it a goal to perform well.
Doing well in school didn’t come easy. It required focus, sacrifice, and dedication. My days were filled with study from morning till evening, and I was always encouraged by my parents, who played a key role in my success. My friends also supported and motivated me, especially during exam time. Before exams, I would prepare carefully, revising each subject, solving previous questions, and making notes. Then, when the results were announced, I would feel an overwhelming sense of joy—a celebration of effort and patience.
Every time I scored well in school, there would be a small prize-giving ceremony. These were simple events, but to us, they felt like national honors. Prizes varied—sometimes a book, sometimes a certificate, or a useful gift like a pencil box or a colorful notebook. Prize distribution day was a festive occasion. We would dress up, parents would accompany us proudly, and the schoolyard would echo with claps and smiles. For us, that small moment of recognition felt like standing on a stage in front of the world.
The joy of receiving a prize wasn’t mine alone. It belonged to my entire family. My parents were proud of me and always encouraged me to do even better. Their support was my greatest strength, and I felt a deep sense of gratitude toward them. My father’s gentle pat on my head, my mother’s smile, and the celebratory lunch that followed—these little moments were more precious than gold.
Scoring well and receiving prizes didn’t just build academic confidence—it gave me social recognition, too. When I returned home with a certificate or prize, my neighborhood friends would praise me. They would call out my name, give me high-fives, and ask to see the prize. This appreciation boosted my confidence and inspired me to keep going. It was a chain of motivation—success led to appreciation, which led to more effort, which again brought success.
I remember clearly how happy I felt on those days. My friends and I would gather around, congratulate each other, and sometimes even celebrate with a small cake that one of our mothers would lovingly bake. We would sing, laugh, and take turns reading the prize books aloud. Those small celebrations left a big mark on my heart. They taught us that success, no matter how small, should be acknowledged and celebrated.
Looking back now, I realize how those little achievements laid the foundation for larger dreams. Those prize days taught me the value of hard work, patience, and self-belief. I understood that every effort counts and that perseverance always brings results. That realization has stayed with me throughout life. Even now, when life becomes overwhelming or challenges arise, I remind myself of those days—the days when I worked hard and succeeded, even if it was just for a certificate or a storybook.
Those school prizes weren’t mere objects. They were powerful symbols. Each book or certificate was a proof that I could set a goal and achieve it. I remember how carefully I would store them in my study drawer, taking them out from time to time to look at them with pride. I would touch the cover, read the words aloud, and feel as if they were whispering to me: “You did it. You can do it again.”
Our small government quarter had many kids of similar age. We played together, studied together, and often competed in exams and cultural programs. But when someone won a prize, everyone cheered for them. We were both rivals and friends. That environment helped us grow—not just academically, but emotionally. There was no bitterness, only motivation. When I brought home a prize, my friends would gather around me, and we’d all admire it together. Sometimes, we’d even write each other little notes of encouragement.
On the day of the prize distribution, my mother would cook something special—maybe mashed potatoes with mustard oil, or fried eggplant. Those dishes tasted better than any restaurant meal. Occasionally, my father would take me to the market afterward to buy a new notebook, which I’d label carefully: “My Prize Notebook.” I would use it for my best handwriting or my secret poems. That notebook became a symbol of my effort and pride.
Apart from academics, we also received prizes in cultural activities. I loved singing and reciting poems. Once, I won a glass mug for a poetry recitation. I preserved it for years as a prized possession. These moments were more than just school events; they were stepping stones that shaped my personality. The applause, the recognition, and the feeling of being seen and valued—all contributed to my self-esteem.
As I grew older, I began to understand the deeper value of those memories. They weren’t just cute childhood moments. They were life lessons in disguise. They taught me that success comes from sincere effort. That rewards don’t have to be big to be meaningful. That family support and encouragement are priceless. Most of all, they taught me that we should cherish and celebrate every little victory in life.
Today, many years later, the school, the teachers, and the friends are no longer around in the same way. Life has moved on. Some friends are in distant cities, others lost in busy lives. But the memory of those prize-giving afternoons lives within me—crystal clear and comforting. I often close my eyes and imagine myself walking onto that stage again, hearing my name announced, and feeling that rush of joy as I receive my prize.
Now, as I watch my own children go to school, I secretly hope that they too will have similar moments—of joy, pride, and discovery. I want them to know what it feels like to be appreciated for their hard work. I want them to experience the same warmth of success, the same sparkle in the eyes, and the same sense of achievement that I once felt.
Those small achievements of childhood were not small at all. They were the beginning of a journey. They built my resilience, taught me to believe in myself, and helped me understand that every step counts. Even today, whenever life gets hard, I go back to those memories for strength. And they never fail me.
That is the true magic of childhood prizes. They stay with you—not just in your drawers or cupboards—but in your spirit.
