A Fun Guide to Societal Collapse for the Whole Family

The Frugal Survival Index When Working People Can't Afford to Live: Historical Precedents and Current Projections Or: A Fun Guide to Societal Collapse for the Whole Family "Soylent Green is set in 2022. We're four years late to our dystopia."

---

PART ONE: THE HISTORICAL PATTERN

Before examining current survival costs, we must understand what happens when working people cannot afford to exist. History provides unambiguous evidence: when survival math breaks, societies break with it.

The pattern is iron. It repeats across centuries and continents. Economists keep rediscovering it like it's news. Spoiler: it's not. Hollywood kept warning us too — Soylent Green set in 2022 , The Running Man set in 2017-2019 , Blade Runner set in 2019 . We've been living in the backstory of 1970s-80s dystopian fiction and somehow failed to notice.

---

The Threshold Table

Survival Cost as % of Income Historical Outcome Sci-Fi Equivalent ------------------------------ ------------------- ------------------- 50-60% Manageable hardship, limited savings, one avocado toast away from poverty Normal movie. Boring. 60-70% Chronic stress, one emergency from crisis, "gig economy" becomes "survival economy" Opening scene establishing "gritty near-future" 70-80% Food insecurity begins, political anger rises, populists start winning elections RoboCop Detroit before the robot 80-90% Riots, strikes, regime instability, heads of state start checking flight schedules The Running Man America 90-100% Revolution, regime change, guillotine sales spike Elysium Earth pre-Matt Damon 100% State collapse, civil war, mass migration, "failed state" Wikipedia articles get updated Mad Max prequel territory

These aren't theoretical projections. They're historical receipts. The universe keeps sending the same invoice; we keep acting surprised. Hollywood keeps making the same movie; we keep thinking it's fiction.

France, 1789: Bread at 88% of Wages

Normal times: French workers spent 50% of wages on bread alone. And you thought San Francisco rent was bad.

1788-1789: Crop failures pushed bread to 88% of wages .

Workers couldn't feed their families while working full-time. Women—who managed household food and therefore knew exactly how screwed everyone was—led the first actions. In October 1789, thousands of Parisian women marched to Versailles demanding bread. They dragged King Louis XVI back to Paris, chanting: "We have the baker, the baker's wife, and the baker's son. Now we will have bread."

The king's response to "the people are starving" had reportedly been "let them eat cake." The people's response was "let him eat guillotine." History does not record who won that argument, but I have my suspicions.

Outcome: Storming of the Bastille. Execution of king and queen. Reign of Terror. Complete restructuring of French society. End of feudal system. Also, France became really good at protests. Like, really good.

---

Russia, 1917: City Receiving 1/6 of Needed Grain

The math: Petrograd needed 120 freight cars of grain daily. By early 1917, it received 21 cars —one-sixth of requirements.

That's not a supply chain problem. That's a "your supply chain has been shot and left in a ditch" problem.

It started on International Women's Day, March 8, 1917. Women exhausted from standing in bread lines for hours in freezing temperatures poured into streets shouting "Down with high prices!" and "Down with hunger!"

Within days, 200,000 workers were striking. The Tsar ordered troops to fire on demonstrators. Some did. Then regiment after regiment defected. Turns out soldiers whose families are also starving have trouble shooting hungry women. Weird, right?

The 300-year Romanov dynasty collapsed in weeks. Three centuries of accumulated power, gone faster than a tech startup's Series B funding.

Outcome: End of Russian Empire. Bolshevik Revolution. Civil war 5-9 million dead . Creation of Soviet Union. Decades of academic debate about whether communism was the solution or the problem, missing the point that hungry people do unpredictable things.

---

Weimar Germany, 1923: Bread at 200 Billion Marks

The trajectory: - January 1923: Bread cost 250 marks - November 1923: Bread cost 200,000,000,000 marks

That's not a typo. That's eleven zeroes. Your calculator just filed a restraining order.

Workers were paid twice daily so they could buy food before their morning wages became worthless by evening. Germans carried wheelbarrows of cash to buy groceries. Children played with worthless banknotes. Mothers used million-mark notes as wallpaper and kindling.

A lifetime of savings couldn't buy a subway ticket. Imagine being 65, having worked your entire life, and discovering your retirement fund can't purchase a sandwich. Now imagine that happening to an entire country simultaneously.

Outcome: Complete destruction of middle-class savings. Rise of political extremism. Hitler's first coup attempt Beer Hall Putsch, November 1923 . Seeds planted for Nazi rise to power.

Fun fact: the Beer Hall Putsch failed and Hitler went to prison, where he wrote Mein Kampf . The lesson Germany learned was "put extremists in jail." The lesson Hitler learned was "win elections next time." One of these lessons stuck better than the other.

---

Arab Spring, 2011: Food Prices +37% in One Year

Egypt: Bread prices up 37% between 2010-2011. Annual food inflation hit 18.9% .

Tunisia: Youth unemployment above 30%. A street vendor named Mohamed Bouazizi set himself on fire after police confiscated his vegetable cart—his only income source.

Within weeks, protests spread across the region. Demonstrators explicitly demanded "bread, freedom, and social justice." Note the order. Bread comes first. Always.

Outcome: Tunisia's dictator fled. Egypt's Mubarak fell in 18 days. Libya: civil war, Gaddafi killed. Syria: civil war 500,000+ dead, millions displaced . Yemen: ongoing humanitarian catastrophe.

Western commentators called it the "Twitter Revolution" and the "Facebook Revolution" because they'd just discovered social media existed. The protesters called it "we can't afford food." Potato, po-tah-to.

---

Sri Lanka, 2022: When Import Capacity Collapses

The numbers: Inflation hit 54.6% projected 70% . Food inflation exceeded 57% . First sovereign debt default in nation's history $51 billion .

People waited in line for days to fill vehicles. Hospitals ran out of medicine. Government declared four-day work week—not for work-life balance, but so citizens could grow their own food. Finally, a government work-from-home policy that makes sense!

There's a scene in Robot Jox 1989 where a character sees a hot dog and gasps: "Real meat?!" The movie is set after nuclear war devastated civilization. Sri Lanka in 2022 hadn't had a nuclear war—just sovereign default—and people were having similar reactions to basic goods. We've reached "post-apocalyptic movie food scarcity" without the apocalypse.

On July 9, 2022, protesters stormed the president's residence. They swam in his pool. They cooked in his kitchen. President Rajapaksa fled the country.

I want to emphasize: protesters used his pool . They did laps. They made TikToks. This is what happens when you push a population past their limit—they don't just overthrow you, they do a cannonball into your infinity pool while livestreaming.

Outcome: Government collapsed. IMF bailout with harsh conditions. Ongoing economic hardship. The pool has since been closed to the public.

---

The Lesson

Every example follows the same sequence:

1. Working people's survival math breaks — wages no longer cover necessities 2. Gradual desperation — savings exhausted, debt accumulated, meals skipped 3. Trigger event — price spike, tax, humiliation, death 4. Collective action — protests, strikes, riots 5. Government response — usually too little, too late, or violent 6. Outcome — reform, revolution, or collapse

The trigger is never the cause. The cause is always the math. Economists have known this for centuries. They keep writing papers about it. Nobody reads them until after the revolution.

PART TWO: METHODOLOGY

What We Measure

Quarterly survival costs for the bottom 50% of each country's income distribution:

Category Description ---------- ------------- Food Frugal basket: bread, eggs, rice/pasta, canned beans, frozen pizza, lunch meat, mayo, peanut butter, milk, basic produce, ramen, cooking oil, coffee. Not organic. Not free-range. Not Instagram-worthy. Not Soylent Green yet . Shelter Cheapest viable rent not homeless, not dangerous, roommates acceptable, dignity optional Utilities Electric, gas/heat, water, trash, basic internet because you can't apply for jobs without it anymore Transportation Whatever's cheapest public transit or a car held together by rust and prayer Clothing Minimal replacement only you get new underwear when the old ones achieve sentience

What we're NOT measuring: Healthcare lol , phone a luxury, apparently , childcare just don't have kids, easy , savings what's that? , entertainment staring at walls is free , emergencies those don't happen to poor people, right? .

This is survival. Not living. Just existing. The American Dream™, now available in "desperately treading water" flavor. In Soylent Green , the year 2022 features 40 million unemployed Americans and food as a luxury. We hit 30 million unemployment in 2020 and have 44 million on food stamps. Off by a rounding error.

PART THREE: THE INDEX

Current April 2026 vs. Two-Year Iran War Projection 2028

2028 Scenario Assumptions: - Strait of Hormuz intermittently disrupted through 2028 20% of global oil going through a shooting gallery - Oil averages $100-120/barrel vs. $70 pre-war — your commute now costs more than your lunch - Global shipping costs up 30-40% sustained everything comes from somewhere, and "somewhere" got expensive - Fertilizer costs elevated Middle East urea disruption — plants need to eat too, and their food got pricey - LNG prices remain high for importers Europe learned a hard lesson about pipeline dependency

Status: 🟡 Stressed → Severe Strain

Gas already up 21% in March 2026. The party in power during sustained $4+ gas gets destroyed electorally. This is America's most reliable political law: high gas prices = regime change electoral version . We don't do revolutions; we do midterms.

The Running Man 1987 is set in a 2017-2019 America where the economy collapsed and the government distracts starving masses with violent game shows. We got reality TV instead, which is honestly worse because at least in the movie the contestants had a chance of winning something.

Russia paradoxically benefits from high oil at macro level, but sanctions prevent wealth flowing to consumers. Imported goods scarce. The ruble is strong; the IKEA is gone. You can afford the apartment but not the furniture. Putin's approval rating remains mysteriously high, according to pollsters who enjoy having kneecaps.

Utilities subsidized $52/month vs $210 in US . Food affordable at local markets. But youth unemployment 20% in cities, which the government solved by... checks notes ... stopping the publication of youth unemployment statistics. Problem solved! Can't have bad numbers if you don't count.

Status: 🟢 Stable

Best ratio on list. Excellent public transit, efficient infrastructure, vending machines that work 24/7, and toilets from the future. But 30+ years of deflation meant wages stagnated too. You can afford stuff; the stuff just never got more expensive OR better. The good news: affordable. The bad news: your parents made the same salary.

Seoul housing completely unattainable. World's lowest fertility 0.72 — Korean women collectively said "have kids in THIS economy?" and meant it harder than anyone in human history. Children of Men 2006 imagines a world where humanity stops having babies; South Korea is speedrunning the premise. 70% energy import dependence. K-pop is thriving; Korean families are not.

Bottom 50% earns average €10,000/year. Inequality extreme—top 10% earns 30x bottom half. Elysium 2013 depicts a future where the rich live on a space station while Earth is a slum; Brazil's just doing it horizontally. Favelas and gated compounds, same planet. Ethanol/sugarcane provides some oil hedge. The country that invented "ordem e progresso" has the order of a carnival and the progress of a conga line. But hey, at least the beaches are nice.

Oil importer now was exporter . Character development! Indonesia went from "we have oil" to "we need oil" in one generation. Fuel subsidies strain government budget. Rice price stability critical—mess with rice prices and you'll find out why there are 17,000 islands' worth of angry people.

Garment workers earn $95/month making clothes that sell for $95 each. Your H&M haul cost more than the monthly salary of the person who made it. Oil imports devastate. Climate disasters flooding compound stress. And by "compound," I mean "Bangladesh is one of the countries most likely to be underwater in 50 years, so the long-term projections are... wet."

Status: 🟡 Stressed → 🔴 CRISIS

⚠️ Imports 60% of wheat from Black Sea region already disrupted. Bread subsidies raised 300% in 2024. IMF demanding more cuts. Two more years pushes into humanitarian emergency.

Egypt's government is solving this by... building a new capital city in the desert. Because when your people can't afford bread, the obvious solution is a $58 billion vanity project. The pyramids were also built during food insecurity, so there's historical precedent for "distract them with big construction projects."

🇵🇰 PAKISTAN

Status: 🔴 Crisis → 🔴 COLLAPSE RISK

🚨 Already past survival threshold. Exists only through multi-generational housing, Gulf remittances, informal economy. Two more years of elevated oil = potential state failure scenarios.

Pakistan has received 23 IMF bailouts. Twenty-three. At what point does the IMF just get a permanent office in Islamabad? The definition of insanity is doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting different results. The definition of Pakistan's economy is doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting the IMF to keep bailing you out. So far, so good on that second one, actually.

The Mad Max franchise is set in a future where civilization collapsed after resource wars. The original film 1979 takes place in a society "a few years from now" where fuel scarcity has caused societal breakdown. Pakistan at 128% survival ratio—with a nuclear arsenal—is basically Mad Max with better roads barely and real stakes. The difference between dystopian fiction and Pakistan is that Pakistan has 230 million people and nuclear weapons. If this goes Mad Max , we all get to play.

27% of families now food insecure. Directly involved in the war this projection assumes continues. Defense spending crowds out everything. Start-up nation meets shut-up-and-pay-for-defense nation. Cottage cheese protests of 2011 seem quaint now—at least back then, the problem was just dairy prices.

Status: 🟢 Stable → Stressed

Net energy exporter—macro economy benefits from high prices. But domestic fuel prices still track global markets. Most insulated country on list. Australia's survival strategy: be very far away from everything, dig stuff up, and sell it to China. It's worked for decades. May continue working. The spiders are still terrifying, but at least you can afford food.

When survival costs exceed 100% of income, people cannot mathematically exist on wages alone. They survive through: - Multi-generational households 8-12 people sharing costs - Remittances from family abroad - Informal/unreported economy - Subsistence farming - Going without skipping meals, no healthcare, no education - Charity and aid

Currently above 100%: Pakistan 128%

Projected above 100% by 2028: Egypt 110% , Pakistan 182%

This is why DeepSeek's free tier matters. It's not just competition—it determines who participates in the next economy. OpenAI pricing out the global poor from AI is like Ford pricing the Model T at $100,000. Sure, you can do it. But you're missing the point.

In Total Recall 1990 , the villain controls the air supply on Mars and charges people to breathe. In Elysium , the rich have medical pods that cure everything—if you can afford to reach them. AI is becoming like oxygen or healthcare: theoretically optional, practically essential, increasingly expensive. The question isn't whether AI will create a two-tier world. The question is whether anyone notices before the tier you're on gets locked in.

PART SEVEN: CONCLUSIONS

The Pattern Holds

History shows that when survival costs cross 80-90% of income, regimes become unstable. When they cross 100%, states fail.

This has been true for approximately all of human history. We keep writing about it. Governments keep ignoring it. Historians keep getting to say "I told you so" posthumously.

Current situation April 2026 : - 🇵🇰 Pakistan already past 100% 128% — mathematically impossible, yet somehow still exists - 🇪🇬 Egypt, 🇮🇪 Ireland, 🇧🇩 Bangladesh, 🇷🇺 Russia, 🇮🇩 Indonesia in 70-80% danger zone — the "this is fine" meme, but as economic policy

Two-year Iran war scenario 2028 : - 🇪🇬 Egypt crosses 100% → humanitarian emergency again - 🇵🇰 Pakistan reaches 182% → state failure risk still - 🇧🇩 Bangladesh hits 95% → approaching collapse while making your t-shirts - Most countries experience 30-40% reduction in discretionary funds goodbye, avocado toast for everybody

What Breaks at Each Level

Survival % What Happens ------------ -------------- 50-60% Some savings possible, emergencies manageable. "Middle class" technically still exists. 60-70% No savings, one emergency from debt spiral. Medical bankruptcy becomes a lifestyle. 70-80% Food insecurity begins, political anger rises. "Why is everyone so angry?" ask people with savings accounts. 80-90% Malnutrition risk, protests begin, informal economy essential. "Side hustle culture" becomes "survival culture." 90-100% Survival requires external support family, aid . Three generations in one apartment is "tradition," not "crisis." 100% Mathematical impossibility—state legitimacy erodes. Calculator says no. Population says "watch me."

The Question for 2026-2028

The Iran war isn't just about geopolitics or oil prices.

It's about whether the next two years push several fragile countries past the thresholds that have historically triggered revolution, collapse, and war.

History doesn't repeat exactly. But it rhymes.

The rhyme scheme is: survival math breaks → anger → upheaval.

Economists have known this forever. It's in every textbook. And yet, somehow, we keep running the experiment again to see if this time the poor will just... quietly starve? They won't. They never have. They never will.

PART SEVEN-B: THE WAGE DECLINE FACTOR

Why Stable Wages Are an Optimistic Assumption

The projections in Part Three assumed income remains constant while costs rise. This is unrealistic. During commodity shocks, wages typically decline in real terms — sometimes catastrophically.

In other words: I was being nice. Reality is meaner.

Historical Pattern: Oil Shocks and Real Wages

1973-1974 Oil Shock: - US inflation jumped from 6.2% to 11% - Real wages declined for nearly a decade 1973-1982 - UK unemployment peaked at 12% in mid-1980s - Disco was invented, possibly as a coping mechanism

1979 Oil Shock: - Inflation required Fed rates of 20% to break - US productivity growth went negative 1973-1982 - Developing countries faced debt crises, IMF austerity - Led directly to Reagan and Thatcher, which... worked out great for everyone, I'm told

2022 Russia-Ukraine Energy Shock: - European real wages fell 3-5% in 2022-2023 - UK experienced largest real wage decline since records began - Emerging markets saw currency collapses Pakistan, Egypt, Turkey - Everyone agreed we should diversify away from Russian gas, then didn't

The Mechanism

During oil shocks: 1. Costs rise immediately energy, transport, food — prices are fast 2. Wages lag — contracts are sticky, employers resist raises during uncertainty, HR is slow 3. Central banks raise rates — slowing economy, raising unemployment, calling it "fighting inflation" while workers eat less 4. Government freezes public sector pay — to control budgets, as if teachers getting raises caused oil prices 5. Currency depreciation oil importers — makes imports even more expensive, feedback loop activated 6. IMF austerity crisis countries — explicitly requires wage freezes, because the solution to "people can't afford food" is obviously "pay them less"

Realistic Wage Scenarios by Country Type

Country Type Inflation 2-yr Nominal Wage Growth Real Wage Change -------------- ----------------- --------------------- ------------------ Net energy exporters Australia, Russia 8-12% 6-10% -2% to 0% Developed importers US, Japan, Ireland, S. Korea 10-15% 4-8% -4% to -6% Emerging markets Mexico, Brazil, Vietnam, Indonesia 15-25% 8-15% -5% to -12% Crisis economies Egypt, Pakistan, Bangladesh 30-60%+ 0-10% frozen -20% to -50%

Revised 2028 Projections: What Happens When Wages Fall Too

Original assumption: Costs rise, wages stay flat.

Realistic scenario: Costs rise, wages fall in real terms.

Country Original 2028 Survival % With -5% Real Wage With -10% Real Wage With -25% Real Wage --------- ------------------------- -------------------- -------------------- --------------------- 🇯🇵 Japan 46% 49% 51% 61% 🇦🇺 Australia 58% 61% 64% 77% 🇰🇷 South Korea 59% 62% 66% 79% 🇨🇳 China 70% 74% 78% 93% 🇲🇽 Mexico 72% 76% 80% 96% 🇮🇱 Israel 79% 83% 88% 105% 🇻🇳 Vietnam 79% 83% 88% 105% 🇺🇸 USA 80% 84% 89% 107% 🇧🇷 Brazil 81% 85% 90% 108% 🇷🇺 Russia 81% 85% 90% 108% 🇮🇩 Indonesia 83% 87% 92% 111% 🇮🇪 Ireland 88% 93% 98% 117% 🇧🇩 Bangladesh 95% 100% 106% 127% 🇪🇬 Egypt 110% 116% 122% 147% 🇵🇰 Pakistan 182% 192% 202% 243%

Countries Crossing 100% Threshold Under Realistic Wage Scenarios

Original projection wages flat : - Egypt: 110% ❌ - Pakistan: 182% ❌

With -10% real wage decline likely for emerging markets : - Bangladesh: 106% ❌ NEW - Egypt: 122% ❌ - Pakistan: 202% ❌

With -25% real wage decline likely for crisis economies under IMF : - Israel: 105% ❌ NEW - Vietnam: 105% ❌ NEW - USA: 107% ❌ NEW — bottom 50% only - Brazil: 108% ❌ NEW - Russia: 108% ❌ NEW - Indonesia: 111% ❌ NEW - Ireland: 117% ❌ NEW - Bangladesh: 127% ❌ - Egypt: 147% ❌ - Pakistan: 243% ❌

Historical Precedent: Egypt Under IMF Austerity

Egypt has been under IMF programs since 2016. Each agreement has required: - Currency devaluation pound fell from 8.8/$ in 2016 to 50/$ in 2024 - Subsidy cuts bread subsidies raised 300% in 2024 - Public sector wage freezes - Interest rate hikes currently 27.25%

Result: Real wages have collapsed. A teacher earning 4,000 EGP/month in 2016 still earns 5,000 EGP today — but that same salary bought 4x as much purchasing power eight years ago.

Historical Precedent: Pakistan's Repeating Crisis

Pakistan has received 23 IMF bailouts. Every program requires: - Currency float rupee collapsed from 150/$ to 280/$ in 2022-2023 - Utility subsidy removal electricity up 200%+ in two years - Tax increases on formal sector - Public sector wage restraint

Result: Teachers, nurses, and low-ranking soldiers see wages frozen while inflation runs 30%+. Real purchasing power collapses. The informal economy expands because people can't survive on formal wages.

What This Means

The original projections were optimistic . They assumed only that costs rise while wages stay flat.

In reality: 1. Costs rise modeled 2. Currencies depreciate partially modeled in cost increases 3. Real wages fall NOT modeled — makes everything worse 4. Government austerity hits public sector workers, soldiers, police 5. Unemployment rises — some people lose income entirely

Bottom line: The 2028 projections showing Egypt at 110% and Pakistan at 182% are likely underestimates . With realistic wage dynamics, half the countries on this list could have their bottom 50% mathematically unable to survive by 2028.

PART EIGHT: THE ENFORCER SURVIVAL INDEX

Can the People Who Enforce Order Afford to Live?

History's clearest lesson: when soldiers can't feed their families, they stop shooting protesters.

Russia 1917: The Tsar ordered troops to fire on bread demonstrators. Some did. Then regiment after regiment defected. Why? Their families were in the same bread lines.

This section examines whether military personnel, police officers, and security guards in each country can afford basic survival on their wages alone.

---

Methodology

We compare entry-level enforcer monthly pay soldier, police constable, security guard against monthly survival costs from Part Three.

Survival threshold: If enforcer pay covers less than 100% of survival costs, they cannot live independently on their salary.

Assessment: 🟢 JSDF and police can survive. Security guards at threshold—explains Japan's aging security workforce and recruitment struggles. Average age of a Japanese security guard is approximately "grandfather." They're protecting buildings because retirement doesn't cover survival either.

---

🇰🇷 SOUTH KOREA

Role Monthly Pay Monthly Survival Cost Ratio Can Survive? ------ ------------ ---------------------- ------- -------------- Conscript Soldier 300,000₩ $210 $1,020 21% ❌ No Professional NCO 2,500,000₩ $1,750 $1,020 172% ✅ Yes Police Officer 3,200,000₩ $2,240 $1,020 220% ✅ Yes Security Guard 2,000,000₩ $1,400 $1,020 137% ✅ Yes

Assessment: 🟡 Conscripts 18-month mandatory service earn 21% of survival costs. Twenty-one percent. That's not a wage; that's an allowance. They live in barracks, fed by state, essentially prisoners with rifles. World's lowest fertility 0.72 partly driven by mandatory unpaid labor removing young men from the economy during prime dating years. "Serve your country, never afford a family" isn't great recruitment messaging.

🇮🇪 IRELAND

Role Monthly Pay Monthly Survival Cost Ratio Can Survive? ------ ------------ ---------------------- ------- -------------- Defence Forces Private €3,080 €1,940 159% ✅ Yes Garda starting €3,225 €1,940 166% ✅ Yes Garda 8 years €4,377 €1,940 226% ✅ Yes Security Guard €2,200 €1,940 113% ⚠️ Marginal

Assessment: 🟡 Irish enforcers can survive on paper, but Defence Forces had serious recruitment crisis 2022-2024. Why? Dublin rent €2,500/month exceeds soldier pay. You can't defend a nation if you can't afford to live in it. The Irish solution: commute from counties where rent is affordable. Nothing says "military readiness" like a 90-minute commute from Carlow.

🇲🇽 MEXICO

Role Monthly Pay Monthly Survival Cost Ratio Can Survive? ------ ------------ ---------------------- ------- -------------- Army Private $8,000 MXN $440 $430 102% ⚠️ Barely Federal Police $15,000 MXN $825 $430 192% ✅ Yes Municipal Police $8,000 MXN $440 $430 102% ⚠️ Barely Security Guard $6,000 MXN $330 $430 77% ❌ No

Assessment: 🔴 Municipal police and soldiers at survival threshold. THIS IS WHY "PLATA O PLOMO" WORKS. When a cartel offers you a bribe worth three months' salary, and your salary doesn't cover food, the math does itself. Guards cannot survive on wages alone—must take bribes or second jobs.

RoboCop 1987 is set in a crime-ridden Detroit where the police are underfunded and corrupt, and a corporation steps in to privatize law enforcement. Mexico doesn't have a corruption problem; Mexico has a wage problem. The cartels are just the private sector filling the gap. The corruption is the symptom.

🇧🇷 BRAZIL

Role Monthly Pay Monthly Survival Cost Ratio Can Survive? ------ ------------ ---------------------- ------- -------------- Army Private R$2,500 $430 $415 104% ⚠️ Barely Military Police R$4,500 $775 $415 187% ✅ Yes Security Guard R$2,470 $425 $415 102% ⚠️ Barely

Assessment: 🟡 Military and security guards at survival margin. Military Police state forces paid better than federal soldiers—because states learned that underpaid cops become problems, not solutions. Off-duty police work as private security "bicos" , which is either "moonlighting" or "running a protection racket," depending on the neighborhood.

🇮🇩 INDONESIA

Role Monthly Pay Monthly Survival Cost Ratio Can Survive? ------ ------------ ---------------------- ------- -------------- TNI Private Rp 1.9M base + Rp 2M allowances $245 $210 117% ✅ Yes TNI Sergeant Rp 2.5M + allowances $310 $210 148% ✅ Yes Police Officer Rp 3M + allowances $375 $210 179% ✅ Yes Security Guard Rp 2.5M $160 $210 76% ❌ No

Assessment: 🟡 TNI and police survive with allowances family, rice, position allowances can double base pay . The word "allowances" is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. Security guards below survival—explains why every building in Jakarta has guards who charge "parking fees" for your motorcycle. That's not corruption; that's their salary.

---

🇻🇳 VIETNAM

Role Monthly Pay Monthly Survival Cost Ratio Can Survive? ------ ------------ ---------------------- ------- -------------- Army Private 5.1M VND $200 $235 85% ❌ No Army Corporal 5.6M VND $220 $235 94% ⚠️ Barely Police Officer 7M VND $275 $235 117% ✅ Yes Security Guard 4M VND $160 $235 68% ❌ No

Assessment: 🔴 Entry-level soldiers cannot survive on salary alone. Vietnam won the war, but its soldiers still can't afford groceries. They depend on barracks housing and state-provided meals—essentially, the army is a very strict food program with weapons training. Security guards well below survival; most work two or three jobs.

---

🇧🇩 BANGLADESH

Role Monthly Pay Monthly Survival Cost Ratio Can Survive? ------ ------------ ---------------------- ------- -------------- Army Private 15,000 BDT $125 $150 83% ❌ No Police Constable 18,000 BDT $150 $150 100% ⚠️ Exactly Security Guard 12,000 BDT $100 $150 67% ❌ No

Assessment: 🔴 Most enforcers below survival threshold. Police are at exactly 100%—which means every unexpected expense medicine, school fees, festival gifts requires "supplemental income." Garment workers earn $95/month; soldiers earn $125/month. The people making your t-shirts earn almost as much as the people with guns. This explains everything about Bangladesh you need to know.

---

🇪🇬 EGYPT

Role Monthly Pay Monthly Survival Cost Ratio Can Survive? ------ ------------ ---------------------- ------- -------------- Army Conscript 3,000 EGP $60 $190 32% ❌ No Professional Soldier 8,000 EGP $160 $190 84% ❌ No Police Officer 12,000 EGP $240 $190 126% ✅ Yes Security Guard 5,000 EGP $100 $190 53% ❌ No

Assessment: 🔴 Only police above survival. Conscripts and soldiers cannot survive on wages—explains why military controls vast economic empire factories, hotels, construction to supplement pay. Security guards well below survival.

---

🇵🇰 PAKISTAN

Role Monthly Pay Monthly Survival Cost Ratio Can Survive? ------ ------------ ---------------------- ------- -------------- Army Soldier NCO PKR 25,000 $90 $160 56% ❌ No Army JCO PKR 35,000 $125 $160 78% ❌ No Police Constable PKR 30,000 $110 $160 69% ❌ No Security Guard PKR 25,000 $90 $160 56% ❌ No

Assessment: 🔴 CRITICAL: No enforcer category can survive on wages. Not one. Zero. The state literally cannot afford to pay its enforcers enough to eat. Pakistan Army maintains loyalty through housing colonies, subsidized goods, and extensive business empire Fauji Foundation controls billions . The Pakistani military is less "national defense force" and more "armed housing cooperative with weapons." Without these parallel systems, the military would dissolve. Police corruption isn't a bug; it's the paycheck.

Assessment: 🟡 Conscripts mandatory 2-3 years earn 34% of survival. They live on bases because they literally cannot afford not to. Career military well-compensated—Israel learned that you pay the professionals who actually win wars. Wartime reserve mobilization strains households when breadwinners get called up for months. Nothing says "defend your homeland" like "also your mortgage is due."

THE HISTORICAL PATTERN

When enforcers can't survive on wages:

Enforcer Survival % Historical Outcome --------------------- ------------------- 150% Loyal, professional force. Salutes flag, defends state, follows orders. 100-150% Susceptible to bribes, moonlighting. "I'm not corrupt, I'm supplementing." 75-100% Systemic corruption, selective enforcement. Laws only apply to those who can't pay. 50-75% Force becomes predatory, extorts population. Badges become toll booths. <50% Force defects, joins opposition, or fragments. "Why am I shooting hungry people? I'm also hungry."

Countries with enforcers below 100%: - 🇵🇰 Pakistan: All categories below survival — the entire enforcement apparatus requires corruption to function - 🇧🇩 Bangladesh: All categories at or below survival — same story, smaller country - 🇪🇬 Egypt: Soldiers and guards below survival — why the military runs hotels and pasta factories - 🇻🇳 Vietnam: Soldiers and guards below survival — barracks life isn't optional, it's mandatory - 🇲🇽 Mexico: Guards and municipal police below survival — "plata o plomo" is just economics with guns

Why this matters:

In Egypt, the military runs hotels, factories, and construction companies—it's an economic empire that supplements wages. The Egyptian Army is basically Marriott with tanks. Remove that, and the military cannot eat.

In Pakistan, the Army maintains separate housing colonies, hospitals, schools, and businesses. Soldiers don't survive on salary—they survive on being part of a parallel society.

In Bangladesh, police at exactly 100% survival explains endemic checkpoints and "fees."

The Iran War Projection:

If the 2028 survival costs materialize: - Pakistani soldiers drop from 56% to 35% survival - Egyptian soldiers drop from 84% to 55% survival - Bangladeshi police drop from 100% to 65% survival

At those levels, state forces become unreliable. They either extract from the population predatory , defect, or simply go home to grow food.

What Happens to Enforcer Wages During Crises?

The analysis above assumed enforcer wages stay constant. But governments facing fiscal crises typically freeze or cut military and police wages:

Historical Examples:

Greece 2010-2015 debt crisis : - Police wages cut 30% - Military wages cut 25% - Result: Widespread protests by security forces, early retirements, brain drain

Argentina 2001 collapse : - Police wages paid in provincial scrip worthless IOUs - Military budget slashed - Result: Police went on strike during riots; looting accelerated

Venezuela 2015-present : - Military wages eroded 90%+ by hyperinflation - Soldiers abandoned posts to work informal economy - Result: Military loyalty maintained only through corruption access drug trafficking, food distribution

Pakistan 1998-2001, IMF austerity : - Public sector wage freeze despite 15%+ inflation - Result: Police corruption exploded; military protected through off-budget perks

Enforcer Wage Projections Under Crisis 2028

If crisis countries face 25% real wage decline while costs rise:

Country Current Ratio 2028 Ratio costs up + wages down Status --------- -------------- ----------------------------------- -------- 🇵🇰 Pakistan Soldier 56% 30% 🔴 Force will fragment 🇵🇰 Pakistan Police 69% 38% 🔴 Predatory extraction 🇪🇬 Egypt Soldier 84% 50% 🔴 Below subsistence 🇪🇬 Egypt Guard 53% 30% 🔴 Will abandon posts 🇧🇩 Bangladesh Police 100% 55% 🔴 Systemic corruption 🇻🇳 Vietnam Soldier 85% 50% 🔴 Barracks only 🇲🇽 Mexico Police 102% 60% 🔴 Cartel recruitment

The Breaking Point

History shows that when enforcer wages fall below 50% of survival costs: 1. Moonlighting becomes primary income — enforcers work other jobs, neglect duties 2. Corruption becomes survival — bribes aren't extra income, they're the paycheck 3. Selective enforcement — only profitable laws enforced 4. Parallel economies — military runs businesses, police run protection rackets 5. Defection — enforcers join opposition, criminal organizations, or simply go home

Pakistan's military hasn't collapsed because it runs a parallel economy. The Fauji Foundation controls billions in assets. Officers get housing, schools, hospitals. Remove that, and you have soldiers at 30% survival ratio — below the threshold where any military in history has remained loyal.

Egypt's military hasn't collapsed because it IS the economy. Military officers run factories, hotels, gas stations, construction. The wage is almost symbolic; the real compensation is access to the military's commercial empire.

Venezuela shows what happens without those buffers. Military wages collapsed, and the only way to keep officers loyal was cutting them into drug trafficking and food distribution corruption. The Venezuelan military is now essentially a cartel with uniforms.

"An army marches on its stomach." — attributed to Napoleon

When the army can't afford a stomach, it stops marching for you. When the police can't afford dinner, they start charging for "services." When the guards can't afford rent, they rent out their loyalty to whoever's paying.

This isn't cynicism. It's accounting.

FINAL THOUGHT

The playground isn't getting simpler. And for the bottom half, the game is getting harder to play.

Every chart in this document is just arithmetic. Addition and subtraction. Income minus expenses equals survival or struggle.

The math doesn't care about your ideology. It doesn't care about your borders. It doesn't care about your military alliances or your strategic petroleum reserves or your clever monetary policy.

When the math breaks, people break.

When enough people break, societies break.

We've known this for centuries. We keep pretending we don't. Hollywood keeps making movies about it. Soylent Green . The Running Man . Elysium . RoboCop . Children of Men . Blade Runner . Mad Max . Every one of them is about what happens when survival math breaks for enough people simultaneously.

We watch these movies and think "good thing that's fiction."

Soylent Green is set in 2022. Blade Runner is set in 2019. The Running Man is set in 2017-2019. We're not heading toward the dystopia. We're in the opening montage that explains how the dystopia got started.

The forecast calls for math.
