Helion's approach to fusion: How it works

An explanation of Helion’s pulsed, non-ignition approach to fusion power generation. Leveraging Faraday’s Law of Induction, Helion directly recovers electricity from fusion plasmas without the need for steam turbines.
By forming, accelerating, and merging two Field Reversed Configuration FRC plasmas in its sixth fusion device, Trenta, Helion successfully reached plasma temperatures exceeding 9 keV 104 million degrees Celsius . Now, Helion’s focus is on Polaris, its seventh fusion device, which will be the first fusion device to demonstrate net electricity from fusion.
Fusion is an electrical engineering challenge

Fusion is one of the toughest electrical engineering challenges in the world — and one of the most exciting.
At Helion, our engineers design and build the systems that make fusion possible: capacitor banks, communications networks, control systems, and diagnostics built for precision and reliability at extreme scales. This video takes you inside that work.
We’re looking for detail-driven, systems-minded electrical engineers to help us solve problems that matter. Explore open roles at helionenergy.com/careers

We design, build, and test fusion hardware across a broad range of disciplines. To achieve our mission, we need electrical, mechanical, nuclear, and test operation engineers who are ready to build something that's never been built before.
Each of our subsystems, including our pulsed power hardware, electromagnets, and plasma injection systems, are thoughtfully engineered in-house, moving us closer to fusion electricity on the grid.
Fusion 101: Fusion, at its core

Fusion powers the sun, sustaining life on Earth by providing sunlight and heat. You don’t need to be a scientist to see fusion's impact—it's all around us. For decades, the world has worked to replicate the sun’s fusion process to generate electricity here on Earth, and we're closer than ever to making it a reality.
But how does fusion actually work?
Hear from Dr. Michael Hua, Director of Radiation Safety & Nuclear Science, in Fusion 101: Fusion, at its core.
About Helion Helion is a fusion energy company building the world’s first fusion power plant. Its mission is to fully satisfy the world’s need for clean abundant energy, saving the planet from climate change and improving the well-being of humanity.

Helion’s Director of Radiation Safety and Nuclear Science Dr. Michael Hua shares experimental results confirming FRC field-reversed configuration scaling behavior in the Trenta, Helion’s 6th fusion prototype. Originally presented at the American Physical Society Division of Plasma Physics APS DPP Fall 2024 meeting in Atlanta, this work strengthens the foundation for scalable fusion energy.
