Before heading out with your camera, the most important thing you should do—and one that is often overlooked—is to research the locations and learn about the species you want to photograph. Over time, the amount of research required will decrease as you gain practical experience with the animals. However, if you’re dealing with a species you don’t know well, gathering valuable information about it and its habitat is an essential first step.

WHERE SHOULD YOU CONDUCT YOUR RESEARCH? I spend many hours watching videos of animals in their natural habitats. The amount of content available is almost endless. From documentaries on streaming platforms to various videos on YouTube, it’s crucial to gain knowledge about the environment and the behavior of the species before heading out into the field.

I also talk to specialized guides. If I’m interested in birds, I speak with birdwatchers who have extensive knowledge of the species they study.

Then, I contact travel agencies that specialize in organizing trips to the destination I'm interested in.

If I know there are wild animals in a nearby area, I go out to explore and look for clues or signs of activity, such as resting spots in the tall grass. I search for droppings or bone fragments. I may also set up a surveillance camera in areas where I suspect there is activity.

Breeding seasons: Most species are easiest to photograph during their mating season. We are interested in capturing images of the young of different species. In the case of Canidae, such as wolves, or members of the Felidae family cats , this is the best time to observe them hunting, since they require more food.

As I mentioned earlier, during my research, I’ll search for animal video and photo services on Google. I’ll start creating a folder with images before I leave on my trip. Think of these images as a collection of the ones that interest you the most. Don’t limit yourself to the photos you’ve saved—these are just images you’d like to capture. This exercise is useful for anticipating the animals’ behavior before you’re actually in the situation with your camera ready.
