Right now we're traveling by train to Bucharest, the capital of Romania. There, we'll transfer to another train and continue south for about two more hours until we reach the Danube River, which marks the border between Romania and Bulgaria. This will conclude our week-long visit to this country.

As we enjoyed the panoramic views of the Carpathians from the window, just north of Bucharest, an elderly man tapped Sandy on the arm from across the train aisle. With a broad smile, he made sure we were looking at the mountains and suggested we take some pictures. This experience was typical of our time in Romania.

Romania is a large country in the European Union, both in terms of land area it is the ninth-largest and population the seventh-most populous . We traveled here to explore two regions of the country that we wanted to visit before they became popular. Tourism is growing rapidly in Romania. In fact, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council, Romania ranks fourth worldwide in terms of growth in tourism demand.

Our first stop in Romania was the Bucovina region, located in the northeastern corner of the country. The round-trip journey from Cluj-Napoca, a city in western Romania, took six hours by train. While planning our trip through Romania, we wondered several times whether it would be worth spending so much time traveling to and from Bucovina. However, after what we experienced, we’re glad we did.

Historically, Bukovina was part of the Habsburg Monarchy and belonged to Austria-Hungary. It was not incorporated into Romania until after World War I. In 1940, the northern part of the region was annexed by the Soviet Union and is now part of Ukraine, while the southern part remains part of Romania. We traveled to southern Bukovina to visit the painted monasteries.

During the 15th and 16th centuries, more than 40 churches and monasteries were built to commemorate the victories over the Ottomans. In southern Bukovina, eight of these monasteries have been designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites. What sets these churches apart are the frescoes on their interiors and exteriors.

We saw two of the best-preserved churches. The Voronet Monastery has been dubbed the “Sistine Chapel of the East” because of its magnificent exterior frescoes and the use of a predominant shade of blue, known as “Voronet blue.” One of the exterior walls features scenes of saints, another depicts the Last Judgment, and a third tells the story of Genesis. The fourth wall lacks detail, as time and weather have damaged much of the painting. It was impressive to see how well-preserved the other three exterior walls still were.

To get to Voronet, we traveled approximately 4.5 kilometers or 2.8 miles round trip from our lodging in the small village of Gura Humorului, following a narrow country road that wound through the countryside and crossed a river. Along the way, we saw several horses and wagons, as well as women gathered at small markets and cows grazing beside the path. The farms in the area are small and focus mainly on growing vegetables. We also saw apple and plum trees.

The next day, we visited the Humor Monastery, which is located about 6 kilometers 3.7 miles in the opposite direction from Gura Humorului. This time, we were able to get there by shared taxi. The frescoes are similar to those at Voronet, but they were painted about 60 years later, so they were more detailed.

In addition to another fresco depicting the Last Judgment, one of the exterior walls features the parable of the Prodigal Son. There are also many frescoes inside. The predominant color here especially in the interior frescoes is a reddish brown. This monastery was not very crowded and had a large tower next to the church.

We climbed to the top of the tower, where we enjoyed beautiful views of the surrounding area. Our second stop in Romania will be a little better known. The region of Transylvania is located in the center of the country and is associated with vampires and Dracula. This area is bordered to the east and south by the Carpathian Mountains and is famous for its natural beauty and medieval towns.

We avoided the tourist destinations associated with Dracula and decided to stay in the historic Saxon city of Brasov. German settlers established several towns in this region, including Brasov, during the 11th and 12th centuries. Brasov has several buildings dating back to the Middle Ages, including two towers known as the Black Tower and the White Tower and a church called the Black Church which got its name after a fire in 1689 that blackened it .

The old city walls and a large main square Piata Sfatului are also part of Brasov’s Old Town, and we spent a day exploring this area, strolling through the narrow pedestrian streets and climbing the White Tower. On another day, we took a cable car to the summit of Mount Tampa 900 meters , which rises above Brasov. Walking along a wooded trail led us to a lookout point with spectacular views of the city and the surrounding valley.

We traveled by train throughout Romania and decided to buy first-class tickets, since their price was comparable to that of second-class tickets in other countries. During the trip, we crossed the Carpathians and enjoyed the view of green, rolling hills dotted with conical haystacks, wooden cabins, and a few pine forests.

Some of what we saw reminded us of the slopes of the Alps. We made friends with other Romanians and had the chance to chat with them along the way. A lot of English was spoken. Since Romanian belongs to the same language family as Italian, French, and Spanish, we were also able to understand the meaning of many things.
